However, that last hurdle about getting married in the end was just enough to make me say “NOOOO!! You have to be together!” – but even with a broken heart, Aidan (a Duke!) still did the menial tasks of putting the picnic things away and moving her car to take care of Julia. By the time they truly got together – I could finally cheer and breathe a sigh of relief. From their magical first encounter at the footbridge, they should have been together then but one circumstance after another kept them apart and it took a scandal to rescue this couple. These two are very much “made for each other”- both in their strong attraction to each other and in their complimentary characters and temperaments. Here, for the past 12-13 years, fate keeps pulling them apart.

We see all the flashbacks for this couple and think how in so many stories fate is there to help move the couple together.

It really shows that he has a kind, fair heart and deserving of his aristocratic position and power.I didn’t expect this book to be about second chances, but it is. Also I liked that he says they can’t save the world but he intends to do what he can to help those that can be helped. Not only to better understand Julia but also to understand the abuse extends beyond Julia and that there is a situation of the other women Lord Yardly abused and continues to abuse. I appreciate that Guhrke didn’t dwell too much on it so that the readers could still enjoy the romance in the H/h’s story, but it was treated with enough sensitivity, seriousness, and acknowledgement it deserved… I was happy to see how Aidan handled it. more us business! It’s the type of abuse that could have made this book into a dark drama because it’s a subject matter that destroys the very souls and spirit of women. The dichotomy is astounding! I felt both the excitement and nerves of the H/h when they were together and the anxiety and yearning when they were apart. What Julia went through with her husband was serio. I don’t know how Laura Lee Guhrke did it – but it shows how talented she is that she could convey the deep-seated emotions of the characters both subtly and strongly to the readers. The attraction between the two was palpable. They were both strong, opinionated, kind at their core, and what they presented on the surface was a far cry from what was simmering underneath. Review 1: 4.5 starsIt’s hard to pinpoint exactly why I loved this book so much especially considering that the pace of the book seemed slow…The H/h’s characters, however, were so rich, developed, and layered.
